Chapter 3 : The Deadly Trap

We didn''t go far, just to a tourist town called Ember City, two hours'' drive from the city. The accommodations in Ember City were unique, with standalone wooden cabins in the countryside. Arthur chose one near the mountains, in a secluded spot, saying it was peaceful there.

When I opened the trunk to get our luggage, I saw a surgical kit inside.

I looked at Arthur, puzzled.

Arthur explained, "You''re pregnant, and taking you out comes with risks. I brought these just in case."

After organizing our luggage, we visited a few iconic spots in Ember City.

Because of my pregnancy, I walked slowly. He didn''t rush me, slowing his pace to take care of me, even holding my hand as we climbed the hill.

He was playing the role of a good husband so well that I started to think maybe I was just being paranoid about the study incident. Maybe he really was just looking for some excitement in those video chats with strangers.

Halfway up the hill, I got tired and sat down to rest in a pavilion.

Arthur pointed to some blooming redbuds by the hillside and said the view was nice and he wanted to take some pictures of me.

I stood next to a redbud, but he said the angle was wrong. Following his directions, I took several steps back. Unexpectedly, I slipped and rolled down the hill.

Thinking of the baby inside me, a strong will to survive made me grab onto a tree after rolling a few times.

Though I saved my life, my stomach suddenly hurt terribly. Cold sweat broke out, and I didn''t dare let go.

I had a bad feeling that the baby might be in danger.

Soon, many tourists and staff gathered around in a panic.

"I''m her husband and an obstetrician," Arthur shouted as he pushed through the crowd, picked me up, and ran down the hill.

I clung to his clothes, weakly saying, "Honey, please save our baby."

He ran urgently, only responding with a brief "Mm-hmm."

But we couldn''t save the baby. In the emergency, Arthur had to perform an induced labor on me himself.

When I woke up again, it was night, and Arthur wasn''t by my side.

I checked my phone; it was already past ten at night.

Where could Arthur be so late?

I got out of bed to look for him. As I reached the door, I faintly heard voices outside.

"This time she was really lucky, but don''t worry, the baby is gone," Arthur''s voice said.

It was like a thunderclap out of a clear sky. I was stunned.

I couldn''t believe it, didn''t want to believe it. I stumbled a few steps, barely steadying myself against the wall.

Biting my hand, I tried to stop myself from making any noise, but I couldn''t stop the tears from falling.

So it was all his trap.

The person I had lived with for two years, the so-called angel in white, was actually a demon!

I was wrong, wrong to deceive myself.

Terrified, I returned to bed and pretended to be asleep.

I knew I had no power to confront him directly at that moment.

After a while, Arthur came in, walked towards me, confirmed I was still asleep, and then left again.

As soon as he left the room, I got out of bed and rushed to the window.

Arthur''s figure slowly disappeared into the night, but what caught my eye was the black plastic bag he was carrying.

A strong premonition urged me to follow him...
